BIOGRAPHIE
Cathia Pagotto est une conceptrice qui œuvre dans le domaine du théâtre et de la danse. Elle a conçu l'éclairage, les décors et costumes pour de nombreuses productions théâtrales et cinématographiques à New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Istanbul, Portland, Paris, Toronto, Turin et Montréal. Ses œuvres ont été présentées au Harbourfront Center, au Festivale TransAmérique et au Centre national des Arts.
Cathia a beaucoup collaboré en tant que co-metteur en scène/conceptrice avec l'artiste chilienne Marcela Oteiza sur de nombreux projets dont 101 Alvarado, un roman photo et A Year Ago Today, une adaptation des Trois Soeurs d'Anton Chekhov conçue et réalisée dans le désert de Californie. De plus, elle collabore depuis de nombreuses années avec la compagnie installée à Toronto, Public Recordings, de la chorégraphe Ame Henderson dont les travaux ont été exposés internationalement et au Festival TransAmérique à répétition.
En 1999, Cathia remporte une bourse pour étudier le design théâtral à l’Institut Californien D’Arts (CalArts). La même année, elle reçoit un prix pour la direction du projet d’archives de la base de données de costumes par un groupe d’étudiants du Centre National du Costume – Montréal, Québec. En parallèle, elle travailla sous la direction de la célèbre metteur en scène et réalisatrice Janie Geiser sur de nombreux projets et notamment à la création de costumes de marionnettes. Elle assista également Christopher Barreca, scénographe reconnu de Broadway.
Après avoir obtenu sa maîtrise en beaux-arts de CalArts, Pagotto a enseigné en théâtre à l’Université d’Oregon – États-Unis. À la même époque, elle a donné des conférences et organisé des ateliers au conservatoire de Dance Moderne de l’Université Mimar Sinan – Istanbul, Turquie – à l’Université de Wesleyan – Etats-Unis, depuis 2008, elle enseigne en théâtre à l’Université Concordia, depuis 2015, elle enseigne et coach à l'École nationale de théâtre, et à l'Université de Québec à Montréal depuis 2021.
En 2010, Cathia a reçu une subvention de création individuelle du Conseil des Arts du Canada pour le deuxième volet de la trilogie The Suspension of Wait de la compagnie de théâtre Landed2 ainsi qu'un soutien aux projets de création et de production du Conseil des Arts et Littérature du Québec en 2007 pour la première partie de la meme trilogie. Les costumes qu'elle a créés pour Robin des Bois de Geordie Production furent nominés au prix META pour le prix de meilleur costume en 2013, et son vidéo pour Sidewalk Chalk à été nominée pour un META en 2016. En 2017, son décor et les costumes de Water Weight furent nominée au prix META, et en 2018, Instant, pour le quel elle fais les décors, lumière interne, et costumes, gagne le prix DORA pour meilleur production. Elle a reçu un prix URTA 2020 pour l'excellence de la formation de premier cycle en conception et technologie scéniques.
Biography
Cathia Pagotto is a designer/director working in theater, dance, film and visual arts. She created and directed the Suspension of Wait trilogy by Landed 2, and directed Woyceck and I'm Too Sad To Tell You, both OSU productions. She has designed lights, sets, and costumes for numerous dance, theatre, and film productions worldwide, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Istanbul, Portland, Toronto, Turin, and Montreal; among them, Toronto-based Public Recordings' Dance/Songs and Relay; Montreal-based Geordie Productions' Pinocchio and Robin Hood; and L.A.-based Echo Theatre group’s Uncle Vanya and One-Acts. Pagotto has often collaborated as co-director/designer with Chilean artist Marcela Oteiza on numerous projects including 101 Alvarado, an ongoing photonovella, and A Year Ago Today, an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, made and performed in the California desert. Her work has been shown at the Harbourfront Center, the Festivale TransAmérique, and the National Arts Centre.
With a background in visual arts and design, Pagotto has been exploring methods of visual narrative for the last 20 years. Inspired by the worlds of dance, silent film, melodrama, and performance art among others, Cathia aims to offer work that is moving, magical, heartfelt, and honest.
In 1999, Pagotto was awarded a full scholarship to attend the California Institute of the Arts in Specialization in Design for the Theatre. During this time, she worked for renowned theatre director and filmmaker Janie Geiser, creating set elements and costumes for puppets used in the projects, and she was design assistant to Broadway set designer, Christopher Barreca.
Upon receiving her MFA from CalArts, Pagotto taught performance theory and design at Oregon State University, USA from 2003-2006, at Concordia University in Montreal since 2008, at the National Theatre School since 2015, and at Université de Québec à Montréal since 2021. She has also lectured and given workshops at the modern dance conservatory of the Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, Turkey and at Wesleyan University.
Pagotto received a development grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for the second part of theatre company Landed 2’s The Suspension of Wait trilogy, as well as a production grant from the Quebec Council of Arts and Literature (CALQ) for the first part of the trilogy. She is a four-time META award nominee for Outstanding Costume Design for Geordie Production's Robin Hood (2013); for Outstanding Contribution to the Theatre for Video Design of Sidewalk Chalk (2016); Outstanding Costume Design and Outstanding Set Design for Geordie Productions' Water Weight (2017). Instant, directed by Dean Fleming, and for which Pagotto designed Set, Costumes and internal Lighting, won the 2018 DORA for Best Production for TYA. She was awarded a 2020 URTA Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Training in Scenic Design & Technology.
